The internet might not have invented get rich quick schemes, but it has certainly elevated them to a whole new level. Thousands of people out there have bought into promises that they can earn $10,000 in one month on the internet without doing any real work whatsoever. Unfortunately, it just doesn't happen like that. Making large amounts of money on the internet takes time, hard work, and quite often a little bit of luck. And blogging is no different than any other aspect of the internet. Some people out there would have you believe that you can set up a blog and just wait for the money to roll in. While that isn't going to happen, there are several ways to make money using a blog. Keep in mind that none of these will make you an overnight millionaire but that a combination of money-making strategies can provide a tidy second income or transition into full-time work online.
First of all, you can start a blog and then sell adspace. The most common way to do this is via Google AdSense or other Pay Per Click (PPC) advertisers. Pay per click advertising works by paying the owner of the blog (you) each time a viewer clicks on an advertising banner or link. Most of the time clicks earn anywhere from $.50 to $2.00 apiece, but some ads can earn as much as $10 or more if you can get just one person to click. Obviously in order for this to work you need to post relevant content on your blog that will draw an audience and then encourage them to click on your ads.
Alternatively, you could start a blog then sign up with a service that pays per post. With a service like this, advertisers place "orders" for posts about a certain topic or using specific keywords or links. You write and publish the post, and the advertiser pays you according to the predetermined rate. This can be a quick way to make some money since it is possible to write a 200-400 word blog post in a few minutes and you can earn $5 or so for each post. You will want to be careful about watering down your blog with too many sponsored posts as it could affect your credibility which will ultimately cause your readers to lose interest.
In a slightly different vein, you could publish a blog with basic content then charge people a membership fee to gain access to "premium" content that isn't shared on your basic blog. This is a fairly common money-making tactic. However, it will only pay off if you have quality basic content, and very high quality premium content that will make your customer feel that the membership price is justified.
Of course you could always sell something. This is one of the most direct ways of making money using a blog. Promote your product or service and then entice people to buy it. Your product could be anything from an e-book to a homemade craft, and your service could be anything from consulting to copyediting. If you can identify a need and create a product or service to fill it then you could conceivably use your blog to make money selling.
Lastly, you could ask for donations. This is probably the least reliable way of earning money by blogging since it asks people to just give you money without getting anything in return but the pleasure of reading your blog. However, if you put a PayPal button with a "donate if you've enjoyed this content" caption you might be surprised at how many people will feel compelled to give a few dollars
